Study on critical electronic components 2000

Within the framework of the analysis of ITT industrial and technological strategies, the Commission's Directorate-General for Industry, Unit III/A-5 (Information technology and telecommunications equipment: analyses, prospects and strategy) has published an invitation to tender for a study on critical electronic components, entitled "Critical components 2000".

The rapid development of families of electronic components has produced new types of equipment. These components, whose technology is handled by specific industrial organizations, are critical for the manufacturers of electronic equipment and systems.

The Commission has decided to compile a study on the future needs of the European components industry until the year 2000. With particular reference to the fields of information technology, consumer goods, telecommunications, transportation, and electronic data processing, the study will draw conclusions on:

- The importance of critical components for electronic equipment;
- The advantages of vertical, virtual or real integration between the equipment industry and component manufacturers;
- The possibility of cooperation, particularly regarding the design of new products, between the two industries;
- The problems relating to the availability of critical components with convenient quality and price conditions.
