As a principle contributor to European research on Major Industrial Hazards, DG XII of the European Commission has established a Model Evaluation Group (MEG).

The objectives of the group are twofold. The primary aim is to improve the culture in which models are developed and used and so ensure that technical models used in all aspects of major hazards evaluation are up-to-date with technical developments. Secondly, the Group assists the EU in establishing a balanced set of research priorities for its research programmes within major industrial hazards.
The MEG conducts the following tasks:
- Classification of available models in major industrial hazards;
- Development of general evaluation protocols for evaluation of technical models in major industrial hazards;
- Development of model guidelines for model developers;
- Definition of working groups and working group tasks for selected classes of models;
- Status on model evaluation within the subject area of working groups.

The working group is open to researchers and users of technical models used in the major industrial hazards area.
