The main objective of the European Renewable Energy Study (TERES) is to assess the long-term prospects for renewable energy technologies (RETs) in the Member States of the EU and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The report assesses the potential for renewable energy in Europe over the next twenty years. Renewable energy sources and current and predicted costs of renewable energy technologies have been examined in the context of conventional energy costs, market behaviour and projected energy demand in order to establish the level of renewable energy use by 2010 under different economic and policy conditions. This study reports on: - The situation with regard to the current technical performance of the various technologies; - The costs of existing technologies at current prices; - The prospects for developing the technologies; - The foreseeable reduction in costs as a result of technical progress and mass production; - The technical and economic potential of each technology; - The possible penetration of technologies up to 2010 on the basis of four scenarios, using the forecasts of overall energy demand and of electricity demand set out in "Energy in Europe - A View to the Future"; - An analysis of the constraints on further penetration of RETs, and policy and other actions to overcome these constraints. The report consists of four volumes arranged as follows: - Main report; - Annex 1: Technology profiles; - Annex 2: Country profiles; - Annex 3: Reference data. This report has been prepared for the European Commission, Directorate-General for Energy (DG XVII), under Contract No 4.1030/91-02: Long-term prospects for renewable energy in the EU and the countries of Eastern Europe (with the exception of the USSR). The contractors were a consortium of four companies: - Energy for Sustainable Development (ESD) Ltd of the United Kingdom; - Deutsche Energie-Consult (DECON) Ingenieursgesellschaft mbH of Germany; - Intermediate Technology Consultants (ITC) Ltd of the United Kingdom; - Environmental Resources Management (ERM) of the United Kingdom.
