The EUREKA initiative, launched in 1985, interacts with companies and research institutes in 21 EUREKA member countries to help them pool their resources in the development of leading edge technology. EUREKA technological areas include medicine and biotechnology, communications, energy, the environment, information, laser technology, transport, new materials, and robotics and production automation. The 1993 Annual Progress Report provides a general picture of EUREKA's project portfolio as of 15 October 1993. The report covers more than 650 actively running projects, which have a total estimated cost of around ECU 13 billion and involve some 3,500 participants. Over 1,500 of these are larger companies, some 750 are small and medium-sized companies, and more than 1,000 are research institutes including universities and about 200 other organizations. More than 30 participants come from non-member countries, mostly within Europe. The report also provides an overview of the more than 100 EUREKA projects which have already come to an end. These had a total volume of about ECU 1.6 billion, bringing the total cost of ongoing and finished EUREKA projects to close to ECU 15 billion.
