Services and research on safety in the workplace

The European Commission, Directorate-General for Employment, Industrial Relations and Social Affairs (Health and Safety Directorate) has published an open call for tender for research and various services concerning safety in the workplace.

The Commission wishes to embark on research and services in the following areas:

- Safety training and education:
The general aim is to develop awareness of safety regulations and a comprehensive approach to safety matters, and to allow cooperation by setting up a network of trainers:
. Training to prevent accidents in agriculture incorporating the application of Community modules by trainers, TU officials and officials of other organizations (youth and women's groups);
. Development of a training module for the prevention of accidents suffered when using agricultural machinery;
. Development of software for farm management training;
. Pilot training for the coordination of a construction project;
. Development of Community modules for the medical training of seafaring persons under the Directive on medical assistance;
. Training in safety at school: development of appropriate educational methods (without changing school schedules) to give children a comprehensive education in accident prevention;

- Development of a safety culture:
. Drawing-up of a work practice code. The aims are to: encourage workers and employers to prevent handling accidents; take the ageing working population into account; and facilitate implementation of the Directive on heavy loads;
. Drawing-up of a forestry code of good practice. The aim is to apply the Directives on work equipment and heavy loads;
. Research on the prevention of electricity-related accidents suffered by farm workers;
. Drawing-up of a code for good work practice on board fishing vessels, especially those under 15 metres in length;
. Provision of a service to support the activities of women's organizations involved in the prevention of occupational injuries in the sea-fishing sector, at Community level;

- Miscellanea:
. Provision of a service to ensure compatibility of any national system of computers for medical assistance at sea with those of other network members.
