As a result of the Commission's third call for proposals under the BIOTECH programme (OJ No S 118 of 19.6.1993), 103 proposals were received. Thirty projects have been selected to receive financing and several of these will be grouped together to form one larger project. All projects are expected to begin by October.

In March 1994, a call was launched for proposals for scientific studies on specific aspects of the socio-economic impact of biotechnological research (OJ No S 51 of 15.3.1994). A total of 98 proposals were received in response to this call, of which 29 will be presented to the Commission for approval next September. Projects are scheduled to begin in September 1994 and continue until January 1995.

A second call was made in 1994 inviting proposals for research and technology development projects in the field of biotechnology (OJ No S 51 of 15.3.1994). Four proposals were received in response to this call of which three were approved. The selected projects should begin before the end of 1994.
