The Committee of the Regions (COR) has delivered its Opinion on the Proposal for a Council Regulation for the establishment of a cohesion fund. In doing so, the Committee recognizes the importance of strengthening the economic development of the regions of the most outlying and least developed Member States within the Union. The Committee broadly endorses the proposal and recommends that the proposal be approved as a matter of urgency. In stating its support, the Committee considers it extremely important that an appropriate balance be struck in each region between environmental projects and transport infrastructure projects. Projects will also have to be examined to see whether they are environmentally friendly as a prerequisite for funding. The Committee also stresses the importance of assistance for transport infrastructure projects and that any delay for procedural matters should be anticipated and avoided.
