Business strategies regarding protection of the environment

The European Commission has published a request for proposals concerning the attitudes and strategies of businesses regarding the protection of the environment.

Following the fifth Community action programme in the field of the environment (OJ No 138 of 17.5.1993) and the Council Resolution of 3 December 1992 concerning the relationship between industrial competitiveness and protection of the environment (OJ No 331 of 16.12.1992), the Commission would like to examine how businesses integrate environmental concerns and regulations into their strategy.

The analysis, supplemented by a poll of businesses, will clarify the following in relation to major industrial sectors, big businesses and SMEs:
- Environmental problems connected with industrial activities, and companies' perception of the situation;
- The effort made by businesses to confront environmental problems, and companies' motivations (regulatory constraints, market pressure, etc.);
- The most effective measures and regulatory or non-regulatory instruments, and those most likely to promote voluntary anti-pollution initiatives by industry;
- The degree to which businesses have integrated environmental concerns into their strategies, in particular strategies concerned with monitoring and managing the environment (and analysis of obstacles to such integration);
- The part played by public authorities at Community, national, regional and local level;
- The effect of competition on measures taken to protect the environment.
