Bangemann, Member of the Commission responsible for industry and the information market, addressed a conference in Bled, Slovenia, on 6 September 1994. The conference concerned the information infrastructure and the diffusion of technologies in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Mr. Bangemann stressed that the construction of an adequate information infrastructure is a necessary European undertaking and underlined the central role played by information networks in international competitiveness. He emphasized that Slovenia and other Central and East European countries should follow the Union's debate on the information society and should identify the problems and the resulting common solutions which offer them the best chance of success. Recalling European Union aid to Slovenia, notably from the PHARE programme, for its telecommunications and research networks, Mr. Bangemann estimated that it would not be long before telematics services were in place in Slovenia.
