On 7-8 July 1994 the European Commission held a meeting in Bratislava to discuss future scientific and technological cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The Commission asked each of the participating countries to identify its priority areas of action for future cooperation under the Community's Fourth Framework Programme.

The national priorities proposed by the Slovak Republic are:

- Development of science, education and culture:
. Sciences concerning living nature and theoretical rudiments of chemistry;
. Sciences concerning inanimate (non-living) nature and theoretical rudiments of technology;
. Sciences concerning society, human beings, history and culture;

- Transformation of society:
. Economic transformation of the Slovak Republic;
. Transformation of legislation in the Slovak Republic;
. Genesis and development of the Slovak nation;

- Human health and the environment:
. Health;
. Nutrition;
. Environmental concerns of social development;

- Economic development:
. Implementation of electronics, robotics and information sciences in the economy;
. New materials and technologies;
. Rationalization of energy production and consumption;
. Domestic raw materials and recycling technologies;
. Development of systems of transport and communication.
