Final figures from the Human Capital and Mobility programme (1990-1994) of the European Commission, DG XII, show that as many as 701 networks - cooperative research projects - are being supported throughout the European Union as part of the HCM programme. This represents a selection ration of about one in three of the 2,199 proposals received. However, due to the unexpectedly high number of applications, the levels of funding agreed by the Commission were in many cases substantially below the amounts requested. Proposals were evaluated by means of a peer-review system under the direction of the Commission's scientific advisory group, CODEST (Committee for the Development of European Science and Technology). The primary criterion on which evaluation was based was scientific quality. In addition, all proposals had to meet minimum requirements concerning the European nature of the proposed collaboration. The number of funded networks by scientific discipline is as follows: - Mathematics and information sciences: 93 - Physics: 195 - Chemistry: 83 - Life sciences: 156 - Earth sciences: 29 - Economics, social and human sciences: 77 This represents a total funding of ECU 227 million. The "networks" activity, which was developed from experience under previous programmes (notably SCIENCE), is to be developed and continued under the forthcoming Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, which is part of the Fourth Framework Programme for research and technological development (1994-1998).
