The European Commission, DG XI, Directorate-General for Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection, has published a book entitled "Radiation protection 73: Technical recommendations for monitoring individuals occupationally exposed to external radiation".

The European Community is obliged by the Euratom Treaty to establish basic safety standards for the protection of workers and the general public against the hazards arising from ionizng radiation. The Community has adopted a number of administrative and legislative measures in this area since 1959.

The publication is intended to provide guidance for operating individual monitoring services, for dosimeter and personal dosimetry systems design and for the formulation of legislation in this field.
