In response to a question from the European Parliament on the provision for mathematics research under the Fourth Framework programme, Commissioner Ruberti stated that the Commission is not to conduct any specific research activity on mathematics.

However, since 1985, the Commission has used the Stimulation, Science and Capital programme to fund hundreds of study grants and research projects in the area of mathematics. These measures were not restrained to one particular area of research but were directed at the training and mobility of researchers and the establishment of researchers.

A similar activity is included under the Fourth Framework Programme. Past and more recent experience shows that the proportion of the overall budget of the specific programme for this kind of activity is in the order of 10%. The proportion of Community funds allocated to mathematics should therefore continue to increase over the next few years and hence make a significant contribution to maintaining and stimulating mathematics research in Europe.
