The European Commission, DG XIII has published a report entitled "An assessment of progress in human genome programmes worldwide". It has been prepared as a support study for the evaluation of the European Community's human genome analyses programme.

The report is based on a one-year survey in approximately 100 research laboratories all over the world in an effort to examine the state of current research in this area.

The report also examines the major issues in genome research. This covers genetic mapping, stressing the contribution of microsatellite-based approaches and the importance of data acquisition and information, technology, physical mapping with TAC contigs as well as genomic and DNA sequencing and instrumentation.
