In the framework of the LINGUA programme, a symposium on "Language audits and needs analyses" was held in Saarbrucken, Germany, on 27 February to 1 March 1994. The Task Force for Human Resources, Education, Training and Youth has now published the symposium proceedings.

Needs analysis and linguistic audits have been a major component of the majority of projects under LINGUA, in particular under Action III, which promotes knowledge of foreign languages used in work relations and economic life.

The proceedings consist of papers presented at the symposium on the subject of language audits, and an overview of the outcome and recommendations of the sessions. Language needs are examined from an employers' perspective, and profiles of an audit and an auditor are presented.

Summaries of participating projects and a list of participants are also included.
