Danish VRC assists in exploitation of fish fence for hydro-electrical power plant

The Danish VALUE Relay Centre (VRC) has drawn up a licence agreement on the exploitation of results stemming from an AIR project concerning the development of a non-physical fish fence using combined infrasonic and electronic fields.

The project reflects the very effective international collaboration led by the Danish Technological Institute, involving Simrad Osprey Ltd from Scotland, a company with strong experience in naval systems, Videbraek Hojtalerfabrik from Norway, and the Institute of Offshore Engineering from the Herriot-Watt University in Scotland.

The result of the collaboration is a non-physical fence which, without harming fish in any way, solves the problem of salmon and other species entering the power station inlets and turbines of hydro-power plants.

The system has been successfully demonstrated with live fish, leading many European power utilities to ask for further presentations, trials and commercial bids.

The Danish VRC learned about the project through a search on the CORDIS Projects database and contacted the partners offering to write an exploitation agreement to suit all parties. After it became clear that there was potential for industrial exploitation, the VRC identified the potential for patent protection and negotiated the conditions for a licence contract including ownership compensation and exploitation rights.

The licence agreement is now signed, with all the parties in the research project participating in the industrial phase, either through production or consultancy.

The product licencee, Simrad Osprey, has highlighted the importance of the role played by the VRC in identifying and exploiting this opportunity.
