The Commission has approved an ECU 25 million grant to support the recurrent costs of the Palestinian education sector.

One part of the grant, ECU 10 million, will immediately be released to meet the recurrent costs of primary and secondary schools for the months of February and March 1995.

The second part, ECU 15 million, will cover the recurrent costs of the universities and community colleges for the whole of 1995. The EU supported the same institutions in 1994 with a similar commitment which enabled them to remain open. Eight universities and seven community colleges benefited in 1994 from this EU support. These institutions offer a range of courses in Liberal Arts, Science, Education, Engineering, Economics and Business Administration, Islamic Studies, Nursing, and Agriculture.

The financing comes out of an amount of ECU 500 million (ECU 250 million in grants and ECU 250 million in loans) over a period of five years (1994-1998) which the European Union has set aside for the development of the Occupied Territories.
