The Alliance of Maritime Regional Interests in Europe (AMRIE) has set up a project concerned with the impact of information technology on maritime activities. The project, MARIS (Maritime Information Society), was presented at the G7 summit on the information society on 25-26 February 1995 in Brussels. MARIS will provide an overview and framework for the application of information technology to maritime activities, in order to involve maritime regions in the transition process from the industrial to the information society. It covers applications in the following fields: - Maritime industries; - Logistics and multimodal transport; - Maritime safety; - Environment and marine resources. MARIS represents a decisive step in strengthening the economics of maritime regions and improving competitiveness of the services and industries which support them. The aim of AMRIE, established on the initiative of three Members of the European Parliament and responsible for setting up MARIS, is to give the regional interests a political voice and establish an integrated marine strategy for the European Union. The Steering Group, elected at the Third High Level Conference of Maritime Regions in Europe during November 1994, represents regions from Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man, together with the European Transport Workers Union. The main themes of AMRIE are employment, environment and centres of excellence. There are four specialist working groups, which are concerned with matters such as the regional aspects of short sea shipping, European ports policy, shipping quality and centres of excellence to protect the skill and technology base for the future. A strong relationship has been developed with the Marine Industries Forum, an initiative involving commercial and industrial interests promoted by the European Commission.
