The Third High Level Conference of Maritime Regions in Europe, organized by the Alliance of Maritime Regional Interests in Europe (AMRIE), took place in Genoa, Italy, on 3-4 November 1994. Over 120 representatives from Europe's maritime regions and interests attended the conference. Participating bodies included regional governments, universities and research networks, and technology centres of excellence. The following sessions took place: - AMRIE progress reports of working groups; - European Commission policy; - AMRIE Annual General Assembly; - European Parliament initiatives and the Maritime Industries Forum (MIF). With regard to Commission policy, the conference examined the opportunities for maritime research in the BRITE/EURAM III programme, in light of the programme's objectives to: - Enhance industrial competitiveness; - Support product innovation; - Set up measures to support transport. The Commission also highlighted the maritime research theme of the Transport programme under the Fourth Framework Programme. Although not large, the maritime element will focus on strategic objectives aimed at: - Enhancing those aspects which have an overall European dimension; - Promoting the general transfer from road transport to sea; - Specific actions such as vessel traffic management. The Commission also reviewed the problems of the fisheries sector, in particular the conflicts arising from the contraction of the industry and the pressures put upon national fishing fleets. AMRIE has now published the proceedings of the conference, including the conference programme, the list of participants, the concluding press release, together with copies, where available, of speeches and papers presented.
