A common position has been adopted by the Council with a view to adopting a European Parliament and Council Directive on the use of standards for the transmission of television signals.

The proposed Directive decrees that Member States take appropriate measures to promote the accelerated development of advanced television services including wide-screen television services, high-definition television services and television services using fully digital transmission systems.

The Council's common position concentrates on the provision of a regulatory framework with enough flexibility to allow for technological and market development. It also focuses on the need to strike a balance between consumer interests and the interests of the relevant economic sectors.
