On a proposal from Mr. Christos Papoutsis, Commissioner responsible for tourism, the Commission adopted on 5 April 1995 a Green Paper on the role of the European Union in the field of tourism.

The purpose of the Green Paper is to facilitate and stimulate thought on the EU's role in assisting tourism, bearing in mind the report which the Commission is to submit to the Council by 1996 at the latest. In particular, the Green Paper:

- Describes the actions currently being carried out by the Community in the field of tourism and the instruments it already possesses for this purpose;

- Conducts a more in-depth examination of the value-added which would result from a policy implemented at Community level;

- Presents the prospects for progress in this field, bearing in mind the options which could be envisaged for defining the future role of the Union:
. Tourism may continue to benefit from measures under various Community actions without a specific action programme being drawn up;
. Maintenance of Community involvement in the present framework and at the present level;
. Reinforcing Community action on the basis of the existing Treaty;
. Greater Community intervention to assist tourism.

The Green Paper requests the Member States, the EU institutions, representative organizations, and other bodies active in tourism at all levels, to state their opinions on the options set out in the Green Paper on the EU's role in the field of tourism.

For details on the content of, and background to, the Green Paper, please see the text (TXT) field of this news item.
