Within the framework of the Community action plan in favour of tourism, the European Commission, DG XXIII, has decided to establish a European Prize for Tourism and the Environment, open to all the countries in the European Economic Area. The aim of the prize is to develop the awareness and responsibility of participating States and their inhabitants to the critical need for the tourism industry to respect both the natural and cultural environment. The prize will be awarded to a tourist destination which has developed sustainable tourism in such a way as to respect the environment and in an exemplary manner. The selection of candidates will take place successively at the regional, national and European level. A "1995 European Prize for Tourism and the Environment Magazine" has been launched to keep participants and interested parties informed of all the latest developments in the implementation of the prize. It will act as a link between the 17 Steering Groups responsible for organizing the prize.
