Validation of alternative methods

The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a call for expressions of interest for the establishment of a list of institutes, organizations or companies to assist the Commission with studies in the area of validation of alternative methods.

The Commission will draw up a list of suitable candidates to whom the awarding authority will, at the appropriate time, send out a letter of invitation to tender together with specifications. The list drawn up following this notice will be used solely for contracts whose estimated value is below the thresholds laid down in the relevant public procurement Directives.

Services required will include:

- Evaluation of the relevance and reliability (validation) of test procedures not carried out on animals with a view to evaluating the potential toxicity of chemicals and other products, and establishing the effectiveness of various types of biologically active products in the following area: in-vitro test on respiratory toxicity;

- Design and statistical evaluation of studies on validation of alternative methods;

- In-vitro tests for the classification and labelling of chemicals, and for the completely safe use of chemicals and other various types of products, related to:
. Acute systemic toxicity;
. Ocular toxicity;
. Dermal irritation and corrosivity;
. Dermal penetration;
. The metabolism and hepatoxicity;
. Nephrotoxicity;
. Respiratory toxicity;
. Reproductive toxicity;
. Neurotoxicity;
. Immunotoxicity and allergization;
. Haematotoxicity;
. Cell transformation and human propagation;

- In-vitro tests for quality control and safety evaluation of:
. Vaccines;
. Hormones;
. Pharmaceutical products;
. Products used in cosmetic compositions;

- Evaluation of non-invasive methods used within the context of studies on human volunteers;

- Ethical and practical aspects of the use of animals and transgenic cells.

Candidates should apply in writing to the address given below stating clearly which groups of studies they are interested in and providing the following details:

- Candidate's references (name, legal status, address, telephone, telex and facsimile numbers, VAT number, names and functions of the managerial staff or of the company's authorized representative);
- Certificates or statement on oath issued by authorized organizations confirming payment of taxes and social security contributions;
- List of the principal projects or studies in the areas mentioned carried out in the past three years.

Candidates are requested to send the information requested above to the address shown but not to ask for further information at this stage. Candidates will be notified of the result of their application.
