Comparison of European and Russian design codes for fast reactors

The European Commission, DG XI, has published an invitation to tender for the completion of a study comparing European and Russian design codes for fast reactors.

This study falls within the framework of cooperation with the Russian Federation on codes and standards for fast reactors (FRs). The objective of the study is to achieve a structured interchange of information on Russian design codes, manufacturing standards and materials specifications in order to identify similarities and discrepancies between Russian and European codes and standards for reactor components; particularly those related to safety.

The study should include:

- Comparisons between European and Russian design codes for class I components such as thin vessels and pipes, including their welded joints, and comparison between design methodologies adopted against main failure modes;
- Comparisons between European and Russian manufacturing procedures for class I components such as thin vessels and pipes, including their welded joints;
- Collection of material specifications and standards used by Russians on mechanical properties: tensile, creep, fatigue and creep-fatigue of FRs;
- Generation of data bases and analysis of data.

The study is to be conducted in close cooperation with the Russian standardization body and should make extensive use of European methodology for pre-harmonization studies carried out in Western Europe.
