The European Commission has recently presented its proposals with regard to innovatory projects financed under article 10 of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). These measures, which supplement the programmes and programmation documents also financed by the ERDF, are aimed at stimulating the emergence of new strategies in the area of regional economic development.

For the period 1994-1998, the innovatory projects of the ERDF will dispose of budget of approximately ECU 400 million and will be orientated around the following themes:

- Inter-regional cooperation both within the Community and between Community and third country regions (ECU 180 million);
- Innovation for regional and local economic development (ECU 90 million);
- Regional development (ECU 45 million);
- Urban policy (ECU 80 million).

Concretely, these themes will be organized into three programmes: one programme covering the first two themes and one programme for each of the remaining two themes. Financial support will be given to eight different types of project:

- Urban pilot projects;
- Cooperation projects integrating the concept of the Information Society;
- Cooperation projects promoting innovation and technology transfer;
- Cooperation projects founded on new employment sources;
- Cultural cooperation projects;
- Internal inter-regional cooperation projects;
- External inter-regional cooperation projects;
- Pilot projects in the area of regional development.

Calls for proposals for the first five types of action will be published in the Official Journal of the European Communities in September 1995. The other categories will be covered by calls published in 1996.

The forthcoming "Directoria" (Brussels, 4-6 December 1995), the yearly meeting of directors of local and regional authorities financed by the European Commission, will, moreover, be dedicated to these projects. It will offer a platform for the exchange of information and development of contacts for both local and regional authorities and other project proposers.
