The European Parliament and the Council have adopted a Decision to officially extend the existing "Europe against AIDS" programme until the end of December 1995.

The initial action plan for the AIDS programme expired at the end of 1993. The present Decision formally adopts the action plan for the period 1994-1995, pending the adoption of a new multiannual programme.

The action plan covers the following main areas:

- Assessment of the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of the general public and certain target groups;
- Information and awareness raising campaigns for the public and these groups;
- Special measures for children and young people;
- Prevention of HIV transmission among particular groups and in particular settings, including actions under the following headings:
. Travel and tourism;
. Prisons;
. Injecting drug users;
. Women exposed to specific risks of infection by HIV;
. Vertical transmission of HIV from mothers to children;
. Other groups with high-risk life styles;
. Safety of blood and blood products;
- Social and psychological support;
- Gathering data on HIV and AIDS;
- Combating discrimination against people with HIV and AIDS and those close to them;
- Coordination with other programmes related to HIV/AIDS (including, notably, research activities under the Fourth Framework Programme).
