The European Commission has appointed Professor Jorma Routti from Finland as the new Director-General of DG XII - Science, Research and Development. Professor Routti is currently president of the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (SITRA). SITRA is an independent public fund responsible to Parliament. The principal task of SITRA is to bridge the gap between research and industry. This it does through a variety of means, including the organization of programmes for decision makers in economic policy making and the formulation of national strategies and the development of international and national networks for technology transfer and venture investments. Prior to joining SITRA, Professor Routti was Dean of the Department of Technical Physics at the Helsinki University of Technology. He has published widely on physics, mathematics, computer sciences, energy research and technological development. Professor Routti is expected to take up his post in January 1996.
