The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a call for proposals for the completion of a study entitled "Advanced telecommunications networks in the Mediterranean". The aim of the study is to carry out a review of the existing situation with regard to telecommunications infrastructures and trans-Mediterranean facilities in non-member Mediterranean countries. Sectors of intensive telecommunications use and the main innovative pilot projects should also be identified and the current regulatory framework and perspectives analysed. The study should evaluate the foreseeable impact of European developments on communications and related issues in this region. It should also examine means of associating these countries, through cooperative actions, with the development of an Information Society which takes account of their cultural diversity.
