Call for expressions of interest related to the JOULE/THERMIE programme

The European Commission, DG XVII, has published a call for expressions of interest for future proposals for the implementation of integrated quality targeted actions related to the demonstration strand of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energies (THERMIE).

An integrated quality targeted action, in the area of energy technologies, is a major European collaborative project that includes different partners from at least three Member States, or Member States and Associated States. It is designed to have a significant impact on the energy and environmental situation in the EU through the demonstration of specific high-quality energy technologies.

The purpose of the present call for expressions of interest is to create files of potential proposers with a view to encouraging the subsequent creation of consortia to submit proposals on each of the priority areas. The Commission intends to organize a meeting among the various interested parties at a later date.

An open call for proposals will follow the present call. This is expected to be published in December 1995 and will cover the following areas:

- Rational use of energy (RUE) in buildings and integration of renewable energies, including:
. Optimized envelope materials and components;
. Integrated load-management for heating, cooling and electricity consumption;
. Optimized electric and HVAC equipment integrating natural lighting;
. Appropriate integration of renewable energy sources, in particular, solar energy applications through active and/or passive systems;
. Upgraded energy standards and innovative building codes for energy-reduction at competitive costs;

- RUE in transport and urban infrastructure including:
. Innovative technologies for more efficient vehicles;
. Innovative technologies to promote the use of cleaner fuels (including advanced hybrid systems, biofuels, CNG, etc.);
. Innovative systems and equipment to optimize the use of urban transport infrastructure, including telematics for traffic management;
. Integration in city planning schemes and provision of infrastructure.
