Economic Implications of New Communications Technologies on the audio-visual markets

The European Commission, DG X, has published a call for tenders for the completion of a study entitled "Economic Implications of New Communications Technologies on the audio-visual markets".

The aims of this study are to establish a series of categories of economic implications and consequences on the audio-visual markets envisaged by the advent of new communications technologies within the framework of the concept of the Information Society. The study aims at identifying relevant markets and relevant technological developments. This catalogue has to be completed by a preview about possible consequences for the markets and a list of policy recommendations in the European framework.

Therefore, the study consists of at least 2 parts: firstly, an inventory and summary of results and findings of existing studies, as well as results of market trials, should be undertaken. Secondly, estimates should be made, on an empirical basis, on the size of the markets and the time frame for implementation of the new technologies; market-oriented forecasts should also be made. Geographically, the study should cover the 15 Member States, including non-European developments as far as this is relevant to Europe. The study also includes the preparation and organization of at least 2 European conferences at expert level to discuss the preliminary results of the study. These conferences are intended to supplement the study and should be used as additional sources of information.
