The European Commission has recently published a book entitled "Applying Information Technology - 101 success stories from the ESPRIT programme".

This first issue of the ESPRIT results book describes over 100 successful applications of ESPRIT project results. It represents only a small sample of the programme's total achievements but clearly demonstrates the wide-ranging applications and benefits of innovation in information technology. The results have been selected from completed and on-going ESPRIT projects to produce a balanced representation of all ESPRIT research areas and application areas.

The 101 results described in this first edition of the ESPRIT results book demonstrate the breadth of the programme's contribution to the infrastructure that underpins the Information Society. As the Information Society expands further, a huge demand is expected for yet more powerful technologies, a more easily accessible infrastructure and a more humanly acceptable way to deal with technological complexity.

The book is targeted at a wide audience, including intermediaries, industrialists, researchers and others. For this reason descriptions of result applications are written in such a way as to be understandable to the general reader. For the benefit of accessibility and readability, each result is presented on a single page. This inevitably restricts the level of detail that can be provided on each result and the reader requiring further details is encouraged to get in touch with the contact person named in each result profile. For more general information on other results or research undertaken within ESPRIT, a list of relevant contacts is provided at the end of the book.

To facilitate use, the results profiles have been divided into seven areas which cover the main applications of the results described. Most of the results are not restricted to one application area and other potential or existing application areas are illustrated by way of icons at the bottom of the page.
