IRDAC, the Industrial Research and Development Advisory Committee, is the main advisory body of the European Commission in the field of industrial research and development.

Established in 1984 by Commission Decision 84/128 (OJ No L 66 of 8.3.1984), IRDAC advises the Commission, on its own initiative or at the request of the Commission, on strategic issues related to the shaping and implementation of Community policy in the field of research and technological development, including the industrial and social impact thereof.

A recent Commission Decision 95/386 (OJ No L 219 of 15.9.1995) extended the membership of the Committee, from 18 to 24 members, to take account of the increasing importance of research and technological development policy within the European Union. The Committee is, thus, presently composed of:

- 19 members with substantial experience in strategy, research and development work in industrial undertakings, research institutes or other organizations involved in work related to industrial R&D strategy, research and development, appointed by the Commission in a personal capacity;

- 5 members appointed by the Commission following consultation with a number of key European organizations competent in the field of industrial research and development, namely:
. The Union of Industries of the European Community (UNICE);
. The European Centre for public Enterprise (ECPE);
. The European Association of Contract Research Organizations (EACRO);
. The Federation of European Industrial Cooperative Research Organizations (FEICRO);
. The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC);
. The European Union of Crafts and Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (UAEPME).

IRDAC opinions and reports to the Commission are generally published and distributed widely. IRDAC publications in 1995 include opinions on:

- Simplified model contract;
- S&T cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe;
- Coordination of national policies;
- S&T cooperation with developing countries;
- Non-nuclear energy;
- S&T cooperation with non-European industrialized countries.
