The European Commission has published an amended proposal for a European Parliament and Council Decision establishing a support programme to promote knowledge and dissemination of European literature, notably by means of translation. This initiative would be known as the Ariane programme. The amended proposal extends participation in the Ariane programme to include non-Member European countries, such as Cyprus and Malta, who fulfil the conditions for accession to the European Union. Countries who have signed the Agreement on the European Economic Area would also be eligible to participate, as well as certain countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In accordance with the terms of the proposal, the Commission is requested to place particular emphasis on cooperation developed by Member States in this field and the improved dissemination of literature in lesser-known languages. The amendments further stresses the importance of supporting young authors and new writers in general, as well as supporting small independent publishers, to encourage the diversity of literary works. It also encourages cooperation between publishers, at European level, through the creation of a database containing details of publishing houses and their specialist fields. This is intended to support the co-production and co-publication of European works.
