The European Commission, DG V, has published an invitation to tender for the completion of a study concerned with the evaluation, dissemination and impact of the results of Community research under the fifth medical research programme "Protection of workers against risks arising from work in the coal and steel industries".

The fifth medical research programme for the "Protection of workers against risks arising from work in the coal and steel industries" was launched in 1989 and came to an end on 30 June 1993. Its budget (ECU 12 million) was used to finance 56 research projects in the following fields:

- Occupational cancers;
- Occupational hypoacusis;
- Occupational respiratory diseases;
- Occupational muscular-skeletal complaints;
- Diseases linked to exposure to certain chemicals;
- Training and information of those involved in the industries;
- Methods for measuring worker exposure.

The results are to be analysed with a view to:

- Integrating them more fully into the industries' infrastructure so as to make the objectives viable;
- Identifying more clearly the new lines of research which correspond best to the needs of the industries;
- Clarifying the ways and means of achieving optimum impact from European Union action.

The work itself will take place on the consultant's premises, but will necessitate visits to the Commission, the various research establishments and the industries concerned. The work is to be carried out by an expert collaborating directly or indirectly with the European coal and steel industries.
