On a proposal from the European Commissioner, Mrs. Monika Wulf-Mathies, the Commission has approved a development programme, worth ECU 3,042,000, for the City of Aalborg in North Jutland. The programme is part of the URBAN Community initiative. The structural funds will contribute ECU 1,521,000 in total to the programme, of which the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will contribute ECU 1,341,000 and the European Social Fund (ESF) ECU 180,000. The Community funds will be matched by funds from national, regional and local authorities. The objectives of the development programme are to upgrade the Thistedvej area of North Jutland, and to promote industrial growth based on a sustainable and financially secure basis. Measures to be implemented under this programme include: - The establishment of a "Centre for Sustainable Urban Development" (establishment and operating costs); - Industrial development; - Local activities (including training); - Ecological neighbourhood activities. The programme has been agreed on and will be monitored by a partnership established between the Commission, the Member State and the region concerned. Project applications will be selected at local level.
