The Commission's Industrial Research and Development Advisory Committee (IRDAC) has published two reports entitled "Skill shortages in Europe" and "School and industry". These indicate that increased European investment in research may not produce the expected levels of economic benefit unless the lack of qualified personnel to develop and exploit advanced and innovative processes is urgently rectified. The first report therefore calls for increased effort and major investment in the field of continuing education in order to increase the supply of adequately trained young people. The second recommends the raising of technological literacy via improved teacher awareness and training, together with better school/industry interfaces and enhanced contact with young people. IRDAC further recommends the improvement of educational productivity, consideration of issues in a European context, and actions leading to a better understanding of skills requirements.
