The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a report on the Open Microprocessor systems Initiative (OMI) entitled "Technology and the making of Europe: the human story and lessons of a large-scale collaboration.

OMI is a major collaborative programme, conducted under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of information technologies (ESPRIT), aimed at developing the European microprocessor sector. It involves over 40 projects and 150 European organizations and is set to grow even further under the European Community's Fourth R&D Framework Programme.

One of the most difficult undertakings in an initiative conducted on such a large scale is the generation and reproduction of a sense of collective memory and identity, especially because of the constant influx of new players, who have little knowledge of the history of the initiative. The present publication has been written to fill this critical gap and provide players with a range of lessons from the process leading to the formulation of the programme.
