ESPRIT, the European Union's specific RTD programme in the field of information technologies, has released a "Road Map" of calls for 1996. This sets out the areas to be covered by the two forthcoming ESPRIT calls for proposals, due to be published on 15 March and 15 September 1996. It also provides information on the areas for which continuos submission of proposals is possible.

The areas to be covered by the call of 15 March 1996 are as follows:

- Software Technologies:
. Research and development tasks in the area "Distributed Systems and Database Technology" (Theme 3: task 1.34);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the areas "Software Best Practice" (Activity 1: tasks 1.28, 1.29, 1.31) and "Technology Transfer" (Activity 2: task 1.32);

- Technologies for Components and Subsystems:
. Research and development tasks in the area "Semiconductor Components & Subsystems" (Theme 1: all tasks);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the area "Best Practice, Cooperative R&D and Technology Assessment" (Activity 1: all tasks);

- Multimedia Systems:
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the area "Multimedia Support Networks" (Activity 2: task 3.12);

- Long Term Research:
. Research and development tasks in the areas "Reactive Scheme" (Theme 2: task 4.2) and "Proactive Scheme - —Intelligent Information Interfaces Initiative" (Theme 3: task 4.4);

- Open Processor Initiative:
. Research and development tasks in the areas "Systems Technology" (Theme 1: tasks 5.1, 5.4, 5.7, 5.8, 5.14 and 5.15) and "Systems Integration and Applications" (Theme 2: task 5.9);

- High-Performance Computing and Networking:
. Research and development tasks in the areas "Embedded Systems" (Theme 2: all tasks) and "Development and Execution Environment" (Theme 5: all tasks);

- Technologies for Business Processes:
. Research and development tasks in the area
"Business Best Practice Pilots" (Theme 1: task 7.10);

- Integration in Manufacturing:
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the area "Best Practice in IT-based Engineering & Manufacturing SMEs" (Activity 1: task 8.20);

The areas to be covered by the call of 15 September 1996 are as follows:

- Software Technologies:
. Research and development tasks in the areas:
"Software Intensive Systems Engineering" (Theme 1: all tasks), "Emerging Software Technologies" (Theme 2: all tasks), "Distributed Systems and Database Technology" (Theme 3: all tasks) and "Human Comfort and Security" (Theme 4: all tasks);

- Technologies for Components and Subsystems:
. Research and development tasks in the areas: "Microsystems" (Theme 2: all tasks) and "Peripherals" (Theme 3: all tasks);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the areas "Best practice, cooperative R&D and technology assessment" (Activity 1: all tasks) and "Basic Services - EUROPRACTICE" (Activity 2: task 2.25);

- Multimedia Systems:
. Research and development tasks in the areas "Multimedia Technology" (Theme 1: all tasks) and "Multimedia Objects Trading & IPR Management" (Theme 2: all tasks);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the area "Multimedia Systems Pilots" (Activity 1: all tasks);

- Long Term Research:
. Research and development tasks in the area "Reactive Scheme" (task 4.2);

- Open Microprocessor Initiative:
. Research and development tasks in the areas: "Systems Technology" (Theme 1: tasks 5.1 to 5.6, 5.8, 5.15) and "Systems Integration and Applications" (Theme 2: task 5.9);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities in the area "User Support Network" (task 5.12);

- High Performance Computing and Networking:
. Research and development tasks in the areas "Simulation" (Theme 1: all tasks), "Information Management and Decision Support" (Theme 3: all tasks) and "Multi-site Applications" (Theme 4: task 6.20);

- Technologies for Business Processes:
. Research and development tasks in the area "Enterprise Systems Integration" (Theme 2: all tasks);

- Integration in Manufacturing:
. Research and development tasks in the areas: "Information Technology for Product and Process Data Modelling" (Theme 1: tasks 8.1, 8.2, 8.3), "Logistics in the Virtual Enterprise" (Theme 2: tasks 8.5, 8.7, 8.9) and "Intelligent Production Systems and Equipment" (Theme 3: task 8.12).
