The first call for proposals for the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of biomedicine and health (BIOMED) was launched on 17 January 1995 and closed on 31 March 1995 (OJ No C 12 of 17.1.1995, p. 19). The response to this call was very positive, with a total of 1,709 proposals received, involving 6,000 organizations.

Following an intensive evaluation process, a total of 308 proposals have been selected for EC funding totalling ECU 140 million. A further 116 proposals have been put on a reserve list.

The short-listed proposals cover most of the research tasks described in the BIOMED II work programme. These are distributed as follows (number of selected proposals by area indicated in brackets):

- Area 1: Pharmaceuticals research (23);
- Area 2: Research on biomedical technology and engineering (27);
- Area 3: Brain research (41);
- Area 4.1: Cancer research (24);
- Area 4.2: Research on AIDS, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases (22);
- Area 4.3: Cardiovascular research (26);
- Area 4.4: Research on chronic diseases, ageing and age-related diseases (30);
- Area 4.5: Research on occupational and environmental health (17);
- Area 4.6: Rare diseases research (12);
- Area 5: Human genome research (26);
- Area 6: Public health research, including health services research (40);
- Area 7: Biomedical ethics (8);
- Area 8.1: Ethical, legal and social aspects (4);
- Area 8.2: Demonstration projects (7).
