The ELISE II project is one of 14 shared-cost RTD project accepted for funding under the second call for proposals for the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of telematics applications of common interest (1994-1998) (OJ No C 64 of 15.3.1995 p. 12). The project falls under Action Line B of the work programme - "Telematics applications for interconnected library services". The objective of ELISE II is to develop and demonstrate an operational image retrieval service, based on a heterogeneous set of networked image banks located in several Member States. The service will be extensible, and will include a model for the protection of rights, fair pricing for educational and cultural use, and mechanisms for charging. The project will develop a large-scale demonstrator comprising a network of interconnected libraries and related organizations by which distributed image banks in the member organizations can be accessed using standard search and retrieve protocols. Both Z39.50/SR and http access will be catered for. The network will provide security control against unauthorized access where required and charging mechanisms for retrieval of images when authorized. ELISE II will be based on previous achievements of the original ELISE project, financed under the Third Framework Programme, where a prototype of the envisaged system was developed, proving the feasibility of the fully-fledged service proposed under ELISE II.
