The Economic and Social Committee of the European Communities' opinion on the third Annual Report of the European Observatory for SMEs has been published in the Official Journal of the European Communities. The Committee welcomed the report's evolution in its third year of publication, but noted that the data presented was not as up-to-date as possible, and that in an area where it is essential to have extremely rapid updates of economic information, this could be improved. The Committee noted that, in spite of generally improved conditions for SMEs in the EU, considerable difficulties were still encountered, particularly in regard to finding capital. The Committee, therefore, urged the Commission to seek a new balance in the distribution of funds so as to allow SMEs to realize more fully their potential.
