The European Community "Technology Stimulation Measures for SMEs" initiative supports measures for the stimulation of RTD among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under 12 of the specific research and technological development programmes of the Fourth Framework Programme (1994-1998). These measures are based on the successful experience of the CRAFT awards, initially introduced under the BRITE/EURAM II RTD programme in the field of industrial and materials technologies (1990-1994), which were aimed at fostering and facilitating the participation of SMEs in EC-funded research activities. Under the Fourth Framework Programme, the CRAFT Network of Focal Points, originally set up under BRITE/EURAM II, has been extended to cover the SME specific measures under all the relevant programmes. The CRAFT Network comprises "Focal Points" in each Member State which provide information, advice and assistance to SMEs at national, regional and local levels. The European Commission has recently released an updated version of its directory of the "CRAFT Network of Focal Points" (April 1996) which provides details of contact points in each Member State and in Norway and Iceland. The main modifications concern the extension of contact points in Ireland and Italy.
