On 26 April 1996 a new framework cooperation agreement between the European Union and Chile was initialled in Brussels. The agreement follows the signing in Madrid on 15 December 1995 of the joint declaration on political dialogue between the two sides.

The ultimate aim of the new accord is to pave the way for a political and economic association between the EU and Chile. It is built on four key pillars: political dialogue, machinery to prepare the ground for trade liberalization, a strengthening of economic ties, notably investment and services, and the extension of cooperation to new sectors.

On the economics and cooperation front, the agreement covers investment, services, intellectual property, customs, public contracts, the information society and telecommunications, as well as industrial, agricultural, scientific and technological cooperation.

The agreement is to be signed at the European Council in Florence, Italy, on 22 June 1996 in the presence of top EU and Chilean officials.
