The European Commission has adopted proposals for Council Decisions authorizing it to open negotiations with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Laos and Cambodia, with a view to concluding cooperation agreements between the EU and these countries. The European Communities and Pakistan have previously concluded two agreements, in 1976 and 1986, whilst Bangladesh had concluded an agreement in 1976. Cambodia and Laos, on the other hand, have no previous cooperation agreements with the EU. The proposed negotiations would aim to improve cooperation in the fields of trade and economic relations, and development cooperation. Cooperation agreements would also have a bearing on such areas as the environment, human rights and private investment.
