Initiatives on earth observation data availability

The Centre for Earth Observation (CEO) programme of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has launched a call for expressions of interest directed at organizations in Europe, whether research, governmental or commercial (data owners), willing to share the use of their earth observation (EO) data with other users.

The CEO programme aims at enhancing Europe-wide communication in the exchange of information and data between EO users and service providers.

The datasets must satisfy the following conditions:

- They are of potential European interest for EO;
- They have little or no intrinsic commercial value and their availability through CEO enabling services will not interfere with the activities of the value-added organization;
- They exist and require only small modifications and adaptations, to be funded by CEO, to make them more widely available.

Organizations wishing to respond are invited to send one or two pages to express their interest. These should contain the following information: description of datasets; conditions for data sharing; modifications required on the datasets; and potential users of the datasets. A workshop will subsequently be organized by CEO to explain policy and define criteria for selection of datasets. This invitation does not concern long-term issues such as historical archives and data.
