The 11 G7 Information Society pilot projects, which have been running for over one year, have recently produced a progress report on their work. The pilot projects were set up following the G7 ministerial meeting on the Information Society held in Brussels in February 1995. The projects aim to demonstrate the potential of the Information Society and stimulate its development, with the participation of international partners, including non-G7 members and international organizations. The projects cover the following areas: - Global inventory; - Global interoperability for broadband networks; - Trans-cultural education and training; - "Bibliotheca universalis"; - Multimedia access to world cultural heritage; - Environment and natural resources management; - Global emergency management information network initiative; - Global healthcare applications; - Government online; - Global marketplace for SMEs; - MARIS - Maritime Information Society. The projects have completed their initial phases involving the definition and determination of the projects to be undertaken. Most of the projects have either launched calls for participation or already begun projects in their respective areas.
