The European Commission is to grant aid of ECU 7 million for the economic revitalization of declining peripheral districts in eastern Lyon in France. This assistance is being provided under the URBAN Community initiative and is in addition to private and public funding from France.

The goal is to revive commercial activities, stimulate the creation of new businesses and restore security in public areas: almost 200 businesses will be safeguarded or started up, 400 projects a year will be supported, and 300 jobs should be created in cooperation with local companies.

The priority objectives of the aid programme are:

- Upgrading local shopping areas and their surroundings;
- Strengthening economic development around these shopping centres by attracting craft activities and supporting initiatives for the creation of new economic activities by local people;
- Promoting access to employment;
- Action against high-risk behaviour patterns, such as setting up counselling and rehabilitation centres.
