When adopting the MEDIA II programme, the Council insisted that professionals working in the audiovisual sector be kept informed on a regular basis of the programme, largely through the network of MEDIA Desks and Antennae.

This European information network was set up under the first MEDIA programme and currently comprises 18 MEDIA Desks (one per Member State and one each in Norway and Iceland) and nine regional Antennae (Munich (D), Düsseldorf (D), Barcelona (E), San Sebastian (E), Strasbourg (F), Galway (IRL), Cardiff (UK) and Glasgow (UK)).

The Desks and Antennae receive 50% of their annual budget from the Commission and are run in partnership with national, regional or local partners from the public and private sectors. The functions of the Desks (at national level) and the Antennae (at regional and local level) are to:

- Provide a constantly available information service about the MEDIA programme (professional training, developing screenplays for drama and TV series, cinema and television distribution, promotion of audiovisual works on international markets, etc.);
- Handle the translation, adaptation and publication of material produced by the MEDIA programme;
- Serve as a documentation centre on Community audiovisual policy, with particular emphasis on MEDIA and its projects, and disseminate documentation among professionals;
- Promote information on Community information policy among professionals at national, regional and local level (representation at audiovisual events, involvement in activities organized by professional associations, information meetings, etc.);
- Heighten awareness of Community achievements in the audiovisual field among political, economic and cultural decision-makers, and the general public at national, regional and local levels.

These tasks of providing information and promoting the "visibility" of the programme are to be continued and stepped up by calls for proposals.

The Desks and Antennae will also be required to take over some of the information and promotion work previously carried out under MEDIA I, such as distributing guidelines on programme activities or maintaining contacts with the press and professional bodies.

The success of MEDIA II will therefore largely depend on how effectively the MEDIA Desks and Antennae inform and communicate with professional circles in their areas, particularly by:

- Organizing targeted information meetings which bring in experts from the three Intermediary Organizations (Training, Development, Distribution);
- Stepping up representation at events;
- Pointing professionals towards national aid schemes or Community support schemes under MEDIA II;
- Publishing and/or circulating documents on MEDIA II highlighting local projects;
- Keeping the general and trade press informed of the progress of the programme (awards, amounts of funding involved, progress reports on projects qualifying for aid, etc.);
- Bringing the programme's achievements to the attention of political and economic decision-makers and professionals in the field;
- Helping to set up an Internet information and communication network about MEDIA II.

The Desks and Antennae will also provide permanent contacts with the various support institutions of the Member States for the purpose of ensuring that MEDIA II operations and national support measures complement one another.
