The European Commission is granting aid of ECU 5.133 million to assist economic conversion in Caen in Normandy, France, under the RESIDER Community initiative. The Community aid will be added to ECU 15.832 million funded by the French government.

The aid programme should create 450 jobs through five schemes designed to support efforts to deal with the closure of the UNIMETAL-Normandie steel-making site. The five schemes are as follows:

- New transport links to the former steel-making site;
- Support for local SMEs to participate in building road links;
- Aid for industrial estates;
- Creation of an agri-foodstuff industrial park;
- Creation of a local electronic information management industry, in partnership with electronics companies and Caen University.
