The European Commission, DG XII, has published a booklet outlining the work undertaken within a research project, entitled "The B cell "in vitro" human cellular response", financed by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of biotechnology (BIOTECH).

The project was conducted as a European Laboratory Without Walls (ELWW) programme which is formed by a group of scientists and industries interested in closely related topics. The starting point for an ELWW is an EC BIOTECH-funded project which joins with other EC projects on related topics. In this case the larger current project "The B cell "in vitro" human cellular response" is based on three separate but related projects which are part of the BIOTECH programme:

- "In vitro" immunization of human B lymphocytes;
- "In vitro" immunization and phage antibodies in the derivation of high affinity human antibodies against products of cloned genes;
- "In vitro" study of the human immune response to the pollen antigens of Parietaria.

In total, twelve laboratories participated in this ELWW programme. The benefits of this form of cooperation stem from bringing together different scientific disciplines involved in the study of human B cell "in vitro" cellular response. The membership of the ELWW can be expanded to include other research groups at their request. It is hoped that this booklet will encourage participation in addition to providing information to interested parties in the European Union.
